Recommended Itinerary of Extended Tawang Tour

Day 1: Guwahati - Shergaon

220 km - 6 hours

We begin our Extended Tawang Tour from Guwahati, driving towards the peaceful Himalayan village of Shergaon. As we leave the plains of Assam behind, the landscape gradually transforms into forested hills and winding mountain roads. Along the way, we'll visit the beautiful Gyuto Monastery and pass close to the scenic Bhutan - Assam - Arunachal Pradesh tri-junction before entering Arunachal Pradesh.

By evening, we arrive in the charming village of Shergaon, known for its peaceful surroundings, traditional Monpa culture and beautiful mountain scenery. Check in to your hotel or homestay and relax as your journey through Western Arunachal Pradesh begins.

Day 2: Shergaon - Thembang - Dirang

90 km - 4 hours

Spend a relaxed morning exploring the tranquil village of Shergaon before driving towards the historic Thembang Heritage Village, a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site known for its traditional stone houses, rich Monpa culture and centuries-old history.

Later, continue to Dirang, one of the most picturesque valleys in Arunachal Pradesh. Visit Dirang Monastery, unwind at the natural Hot Springs, and explore the beautiful Sangti Valley, famous for its riverside landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. Check in to your hotel or homestay for the night.

Day 3: Dirang - Sela Pass - Nuranang Waterfall - Tawang

6 - 7 hours

Today marks one of the highlights of your journey as the landscape transforms dramatically from green valleys to the snow-capped mountains of the high Himalayas. Driving across the spectacular Sela Pass at over 13,000 ft, you'll witness one of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in Northeast India. Depending on the season, the surrounding peaks and frozen lakes may be covered in snow, making this one of the most photographed locations of the trip.

After spending some time at Sela Pass, we continue towards Tawang, stopping at the magnificent Nuranang Waterfall and the historic Chakzam Bridge, a suspension bridge believed to be over 400 years old. By evening, we reach Tawang and check in to our hotel.

Day 4: Tawang Sightseeing Tour

Spend the day exploring the cultural and historical heart of Tawang. Begin with a visit to the magnificent Tawang Monastery, the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. The monastery offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains while providing a fascinating insight into the region's rich Buddhist heritage.

Later, visit Buddha Park, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, and other important attractions around the town. In the evening, head to the Tawang War Memorial, where the moving light and sound show beautifully narrates the story of the brave soldiers who defended this region.

Day 5: Tawang - Bum La Pass - Sungester Lake - Tawang

Another unforgettable day awaits as we drive towards the India-China border to visit the legendary Bum La Pass, situated at over 15,000 ft above sea level. Besides the breathtaking Himalayan scenery, you'll have the opportunity to interact with Indian Army personnel stationed at one of the country's most strategically important border posts.

Later, continue to the beautiful Sungester Lake, popularly known as Madhuri Lake, surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and partially submerged tree trunks that create its unique appearance. After spending time at these iconic attractions, return to Tawang for the night.

Day 6: Tawang - Zemithang - Tawang

Journey to the Historic Border Village of Zemithang

Today we travel to the remote border village of Zemithang, one of the most culturally and historically significant destinations in Western Arunachal Pradesh. Surrounded by pristine Himalayan landscapes, Zemithang is best known as the place where His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama first entered India in 1959 while escaping from Tibet.

Explore the magnificent Gorsam Chorten, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in Arunachal Pradesh and an important pilgrimage site for the Monpa community. Later, visit the impressive Giant Statue of Tara Devi overlooking the valley. Compared to the more popular attractions around Tawang, Zemithang offers a quieter and more authentic glimpse into life in the remote Himalayas before we return to Tawang for the night.

Day 7: Tawang - Bhalukpong

250 km - 8 hours

After an unforgettable stay in Tawang, we begin our return journey through the spectacular mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. As we descend from the high Himalayas, enjoy one last opportunity to admire the valleys, rivers and winding mountain roads that make this region so memorable.

By evening, we arrive at the border town of Bhalukpong, where we'll check in to our hotel or homestay. Relax by the riverside and unwind after another rewarding day on the road.

Day 8: Bhalukpong - Nagaon - Guwahati

250 km - 7 hours

After breakfast, we begin the final leg of our journey back to Guwahati. On the way, we'll visit the magnificent Mahamrityunjay Temple at Nagaon, one of the tallest Shiva temples in the world, before continuing towards the city.

We'll drop you at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati Railway Station, or your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable journey through the hidden gems of Western Arunachal Pradesh.

Beyond Tawang: Discover the Hidden Gems of Western Arunachal Pradesh

While Tawang is the highlight of this journey, the charm of Western Arunachal Pradesh extends far beyond its famous monastery and mountain passes. This itinerary takes you through the peaceful villages of Shergaon and Dirang, where apple orchards, traditional monasteries and scenic valleys offer a slower and more authentic Himalayan experience.

You'll also visit the remote border village of Zemithang, known as the place where His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama first entered India in 1959. Combined with iconic attractions like Sela Pass, Bum La Pass and Madhuri Lake, these lesser-visited destinations make this tour one of the most comprehensive ways to explore Western Arunachal Pradesh.

Exploring the Remote Border Region of Western Arunachal Pradesh

Beyond Tawang lies one of the least explored regions of the Indian Himalayas, where remote border villages, ancient monasteries and high-altitude valleys remain untouched by mainstream tourism. Home to remote border villages like Zemithang, ancient monasteries, sacred Buddhist sites and breathtaking mountain valleys, Western Arunachal Pradesh offers experiences that extend far beyond the well-known Tawang circuit. Travelling through this region gives you a rare opportunity to witness a slower pace of life, rich Monpa traditions and landscapes that few tourists get to experience.

For travellers with additional time, the journey doesn't have to end at Zemithang. Remote destinations such as Mago Valley and Chumi Gyatse (Holy Waterfalls) lie further north, offering dramatic Himalayan scenery and an even deeper glimpse into this fascinating border region. Whether you choose this itinerary or customize it further, Western Arunachal Pradesh rewards travellers who are willing to venture beyond the usual tourist trail.

How This Tour Differs from the Standard Tawang Tour

Our Tawang Tour Package is perfect for travellers who want to experience the region's most iconic attractions within a shorter holiday. It covers highlights such as Tawang Monastery, Sela Pass, Bum La Pass and Madhuri Lake, making it an excellent choice if you're limited on time.

The Extended Tawang Tour is designed for travellers who want to explore beyond these highlights. By including Shergaon, Dirang, Sangti Valley, Thembang Heritage Village and Zemithang, the journey becomes more immersive and relaxed, allowing you to discover the quieter side of Western Arunachal Pradesh while spending less time rushing between destinations.

Who Should Choose the Extended Tawang Tour?

This tour is ideal for travellers who want to explore Western Arunachal Pradesh beyond the usual tourist circuit. It's perfect for couples, families and small groups who enjoy road trips, offbeat destinations and immersive travel experiences rather than simply covering the major attractions.

If you're flying all the way to Guwahati from another part of India, spending a couple of extra days allows you to experience destinations like Shergaon, Thembang Heritage Village, Sangti Valley and Zemithang that are not included in the standard Tawang itinerary. Travellers with limited time may prefer our Tawang Tour Package.

Why Book Your Extended Tawang Tour with Zikation?

Planning an extended journey through Western Arunachal Pradesh requires local expertise and careful coordination. At Zikation, we take care of everything — from route planning and Inner Line Permit (ILP) assistance to comfortable stays, reliable local drivers and sightseeing—so you can simply enjoy the journey.

We believe in transparent pricing, personalized service and thoughtfully designed itineraries. Whether you're travelling as a couple, with family or in a small group, we help you explore the hidden gems of Shergaon, Dirang, Tawang and Zemithang without the stress of planning every detail yourself.

Best Time to Visit Tawang, Shergaon and Zemithang

March to May is one of the best times to take the Extended Tawang Tour. The weather is pleasant, valleys around Shergaon, Dirang and Sangti Valley are lush green, and sightseeing is comfortable across the region.

October and November offer crystal-clear mountain views after the monsoon, making it an excellent season for visiting Sela Pass, Bum La Pass, Madhuri Lake and Zemithang.

December to February is ideal for travellers hoping to experience snowfall around Sela Pass and Tawang. Since heavy snowfall can occasionally affect road conditions, itineraries may need minor adjustments depending on the weather.

We generally recommend avoiding June to mid-September, as heavy monsoon rains can cause landslides and road closures in parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Can Kaziranga be Visited Along with Tawang?

Yes. Kaziranga National Park can be comfortably combined with this Extended Tawang Tour. Since Kaziranga lies between Guwahati and Arunachal Pradesh, it fits naturally into the itinerary without requiring a major detour.

We recommend adding one extra night to your trip so you have enough time to enjoy a jeep or elephant safari without making the journey rushed. If you'd like to include Kaziranga, simply let us know and we'll customize the itinerary accordingly.

Things to Know Before Booking

  • Western Arunachal Pradesh is an offbeat Himalayan destination. Expect breathtaking landscapes and authentic local experiences rather than luxury tourist infrastructure.

  • Hotels and homestays are generally clean and comfortable but may be more basic than those in mainstream tourist destinations. In remote places like Shergaon and Zemithang, accommodation options are limited.

  • Hotels and homestays in Tawang and nearby destinations get fully booked quickly during peak seasons. We recommend booking well in advance to secure the best available stays.

  • Heavy snowfall around Sela Pass or Tawang may occasionally require changing to larger local vehicles if directed by the authorities. Any additional cost will be communicated in advance.

  • If you'd like to include Kaziranga National Park, the itinerary can be extended by one more day. Contact us for a customized itinerary.
