Driving across the spectacular Sela Pass at over 13,000 ft, you'll witness one of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in Northeast India. Depending on the season, the surrounding peaks and frozen lakes may be covered in snow, making this one of the most photographed locations of the trip.
After spending some time at Sela Pass, we continue towards Tawang, stopping at the magnificent Nuranang Waterfall and the historic Chakzam Bridge, a suspension bridge believed to be over 400 years old. By evening, we reach Tawang and check in to our hotel.
Day 3: Tawang Sightseeing Tour
Spend the day exploring the cultural and historical heart of Tawang. Begin with a visit to the magnificent Tawang Monastery, the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. The monastery offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains while providing a fascinating insight into the region's rich Buddhist heritage.
Later, visit Buddha Park, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, and other important attractions around the town. In the evening, head to the Tawang War Memorial, where the moving light and sound show beautifully narrates the story of the brave soldiers who defended this region.
Day 4: Tawang - Bum La Pass - Sungester Lake - Tawang
Another unforgettable day awaits as we drive towards the India - China border to visit the legendary Bum La Pass, situated at over 15,000 ft above sea level. Besides the breathtaking Himalayan scenery, you'll have the opportunity to interact with Indian Army personnel stationed at one of the country's most strategically important border posts.

Along the way, you'll visit destinations like Dirang, cross the breathtaking Sela Pass, admire the beautiful Nuranang Waterfall and finally arrive at the historic town of Tawang.

This route offers the most convenient and enjoyable way to explore Tawang while allowing sufficient time to experience its iconic attractions.
Is 6 Days Enough for Tawang?
Yes. Six days is the ideal duration to experience the classic Tawang circuit. This itinerary covers all the region's iconic attractions, including Tawang Monastery, Sela Pass, Bum La Pass, Madhuri (Sungester) Lake, Nuranang Waterfall and the Tawang War Memorial, while maintaining a comfortable pace without rushing through the journey.
The route has been carefully planned to balance sightseeing with travel time, giving you enough opportunities to enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, explore Tawang's rich Buddhist heritage and experience one of India's most scenic mountain road trips.
If you have 8 days or more, consider our Extended Tawang Tour Package. It builds on this classic itinerary by taking you beyond the popular attractions to explore more of Western Arunachal Pradesh, making it an excellent choice for travellers who have extra time and want a deeper Himalayan experience.
Best Time to Visit Tawang
March to May is one of the best times to visit Tawang, with pleasant weather, blooming rhododendrons and clear mountain views. The comfortable temperatures make it ideal for sightseeing, visiting Tawang Monastery, exploring Madhuri Lake and enjoying the scenic drive across Sela Pass.
October and November are equally popular, offering crisp mountain air, excellent visibility and colourful autumn landscapes. These months are perfect for travellers who prefer stable weather and uninterrupted views of the Eastern Himalayas.
December to February transforms Tawang into a winter wonderland, with snowfall often experienced around Sela Pass, Bum La Pass and occasionally in Tawang town. While temperatures can drop below freezing, this is the best season for travellers hoping to experience snow. During the monsoon months of June to September, occasional landslides and road closures may affect travel, so this period is generally less preferred.
Permits Required for Tawang
Indian citizens require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Tawang. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) as per the prevailing government regulations. These permits are mandatory for travelling in Arunachal Pradesh.
A visit to Bum La Pass, located near the India - China border, requires an additional local permit issued by the authorities in Tawang. Since approvals are subject to weather conditions and government regulations, visits to Bum La may occasionally be restricted.
When you book your Tawang Tour Package with Zikation, we assist you with the required permits, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. You simply need to provide the necessary documents in advance, and we'll guide you through the rest of the process.
Things to Know Before Booking Your Tawang Tour
Tawang is located at an altitude of over 10,000 ft, and the journey involves crossing high mountain passes such as Sela Pass and Bum La Pass. While most travellers adapt well, we recommend taking it easy on the first day, staying hydrated and following your tour leader's advice to minimise the effects of altitude.
Road travel is an important part of the experience. The drive from Guwahati to Tawang covers some of the most scenic roads in the Eastern Himalayas, but mountain conditions can occasionally lead to delays due to weather, road maintenance or landslides. Keeping a flexible mindset helps you enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Due to the growing popularity of Tawang, quality accommodations often sell out well in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. We recommend booking your tour early to secure your preferred travel dates and hotel options.
During periods of heavy snowfall or adverse weather conditions, local authorities may restrict the movement of certain vehicles on high-altitude mountain roads. If this happens, it may be necessary to switch to a different vehicle to safely complete the journey. Any additional charges, if applicable, will always be communicated to you in advance.
