Day-wise Itinerary Including Wari Chora

Day 1: Guwahati - Shillong

Your Meghalaya journey begins at Guwahati, from where we drive towards the hills of Shillong. As the plains gradually give way to rolling hills and pine-covered landscapes, you will get your first glimpse of Northeast India's natural beauty.

On the way, we stop at the scenic Umium Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the region. Whether you choose to simply admire the views or try activities such as boating and kayaking, the lake provides the perfect introduction to Meghalaya. By evening, arrive in Shillong and relax after the day's journey.

Day 2: Shillong - Dawki

After breakfast, we leave Shillong and head towards Laitlum Canyon, one of Meghalaya's most dramatic viewpoints. Standing at the edge of the canyon, you can enjoy sweeping views of valleys, hills and distant villages spread across the landscape.

The journey continues to Krangshuri Falls, known for its striking blue waters and picturesque surroundings. Later, we drive to Dawki, home to the famous Umngot River. During the winter months, the river becomes so clear that boats appear to float in mid-air. Enjoy a boat ride along the India-Bangladesh border before settling into your accommodation for the night.

Day 3: Dawki - Cherrapunji

Start the day with a visit to Mawlynnong, often referred to as one of Asia's cleanest villages. Walk through its spotless lanes, interact with local residents and enjoy a slower pace of life. A nearby viewpoint also offers glimpses of the Bangladesh plains stretching into the distance.

Later, explore the beautiful Garden of Caves, a hidden gem featuring caves, streams, waterfalls and lush vegetation. By evening, arrive in Cherrapunji, a region famous for its dramatic landscapes and record-breaking rainfall, and relax for the night.

Day 4: Cherrapunji Sightseeing

Today is dedicated to discovering the natural wonders of Cherrapunji. Explore attractions such as Mawsmai Caves, Thangkharang Park and the seasonal Seven Sisters Waterfalls. Depending on time, we may also visit Eco Park, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.

The second half of the day takes you to some of Meghalaya's most iconic locations, including Arwah Caves, Nohkalikai Falls, Wei Sawdong Falls and Dainthlen Falls. From caves and viewpoints to multi-tiered waterfalls, the day showcases why Cherrapunji remains one of Meghalaya's most visited destinations.

Day 5: Double Decker Root Bridge & Rainbow Falls Trek

An early start takes us to Tyrna Village, the gateway to one of Meghalaya's most rewarding trekking experiences. Descending nearly 3,500 steps through forests and suspension bridges, we reach Nongriat Village, home to the famous Double Decker Root Bridge. Formed naturally over generations, this living root bridge is one of the state's most remarkable attractions.

The adventure continues towards Rainbow Falls, passing through some of Meghalaya's most beautiful landscapes. If conditions are favourable and we arrive before noon, you may witness the rainbow that gives the waterfall its name. On the return journey, we stop at the stunning Blue Lagoon, known for its crystal-clear blue waters. After completing the trek back to Tyrna, we return to Cherrapunji for a well-deserved rest.

Day 6: Cherrapunji - Garo

Today we leave the well-known tourist circuit and begin our journey towards the remote landscapes of Garo Hills. En route, we stop at Elephant Falls, one of Shillong's most popular waterfalls.

The drive offers a chance to witness a different side of Meghalaya as the scenery gradually changes from the Khasi Hills to the less-explored Garo region. By evening, arrive near the banks of the beautiful Simsang River. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings before checking into your homestay for the night.

Day 7: Wari Chora Day Trip

Today is the highlight of the South Garo Hills extension. We begin with a visit to Jadesil Fish Sanctuary, known for its clear waters and thriving fish population. The peaceful setting offers a glimpse into a lesser-known side of Meghalaya.

Later, proceed to Wari Chora, one of Meghalaya's most spectacular hidden natural attractions. A boat ride through the narrow canyon reveals towering rock walls, unique geological formations and dramatic landscapes carved by flowing water over thousands of years. After exploring Wari Chora, continue to Aginma Wari Fish Sanctuary before returning to the homestay for the night.

Day 8: Garo Hills - Guwahati

Before leaving Garo Hills, we visit the impressive Siju Caves, among the longest cave systems in the Indian subcontinent. The caves are known for their fascinating limestone formations and underground passages.

We also stop at the unique Rongchang Rock Formation, another natural attraction of the region. With memories of waterfalls, root bridges, crystal-clear rivers, canyons and caves, we begin our journey back to Guwahati, where the tour concludes with drop-off at the airport or railway station.

What is Wari Chora?

Wari Chora is a spectacular river canyon located in the South Garo Hills region of Meghalaya. Over thousands of years, flowing water has carved deep gorges through massive rock formations, creating one of the state's most unique natural landscapes.

The highlight of a visit to Wari Chora is the boat ride through the narrow canyon. As the river winds between towering rock walls, visitors are treated to dramatic scenery that feels completely different from the waterfalls, caves and viewpoints found elsewhere in Meghalaya.

Despite its incredible beauty, Wari Chora remains relatively unexplored compared to destinations such as Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. The journey into South Garo Hills offers travellers an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Meghalaya that is still largely untouched by mainstream tourism.

Why Visit Wari Chora on a Meghalaya Tour?

Most Meghalaya itineraries focus on destinations such as Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. While these places showcase the state's famous waterfalls, viewpoints and rivers, Wari Chora offers a completely different experience centred around canyon landscapes and river exploration.

A boat ride through the narrow gorge is the highlight of the visit. Surrounded by towering rock walls and untouched natural scenery, travellers get to experience a side of Meghalaya that feels remote, peaceful and far removed from the state's more popular tourist destinations.

The journey into South Garo Hills is equally rewarding. Along with Wari Chora, the region is home to attractions such as Siju Caves, unique rock formations and fish sanctuaries that are rarely included in standard Meghalaya itineraries. For travellers with a few extra days available, visiting Wari Chora adds a sense of exploration and discovery that complements the classic Meghalaya experience.

Who Is This Tour Suitable For?

  • Travellers Looking for a More Complete Meghalaya Experience: Ideal for those who want to explore not just Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki, but also venture into the lesser-visited South Garo Hills region.

  • Travellers with Extra Time in Hand: If you have a few additional days available, this itinerary rewards you with experiences that go beyond Meghalaya's standard tourist circuit.

  • Nature and Landscape Enthusiasts: From waterfalls, caves and living root bridges to crystal-clear rivers and dramatic canyon landscapes, this tour showcases Meghalaya's incredible natural diversity.

  • Travellers Seeking Adventure Alongside Sightseeing: The itinerary combines Meghalaya's popular attractions with experiences such as the Double Decker Root Bridge trek, Rainbow Falls and a boat ride through Wari Chora canyon.

  • Photography Enthusiasts: The tour offers countless opportunities to capture waterfalls, caves, rivers, canyons, viewpoints and some of the most scenic landscapes in Northeast India.

Best Time to Take This Meghalaya Tour

  • November to January (Highly Recommended): This is the best time to experience this itinerary. Dawki, Blue Lagoon and many natural pools are at their clearest, while Wari Chora offers excellent boating conditions and canyon views. The weather is pleasant, making it ideal for both sightseeing and trekking.

  • February to April (Good Time to Visit): Weather remains comfortable and most attractions are accessible. Rivers and pools generally remain clear, although water levels may be lower compared to winter months. This is still a good time for travellers who prefer clear skies and lighter crowds.

  • May to October (Not Recommended for This Itinerary): Heavy rainfall can affect boating activities at Wari Chora, accessibility to Siju Caves and road conditions in parts of South Garo Hills. If your primary goal is to experience Meghalaya during the monsoon, consider our Classic Meghalaya Tour or Meghalaya Tour with Double Decker Root Bridge instead, where waterfalls and lush landscapes are at their absolute best.

  • Zikation Recommends: For the best overall experience of Wari Chora, South Garo Hills, Dawki, the Double Decker Root Bridge, Meghalaya's crystal-clear waters and the most photogenic landscapes, plan your trip between November and January.

Things to Know Before Booking

  • Except for Shillong, accommodation will primarily be in homestays. These are generally neat, clean and comfortable, but facilities may be simpler compared to city hotels.

  • Breakfast options at homestays are usually limited and prepared fresh based on the number of guests. Buffet breakfasts / meals are generally not available.

  • If seeing crystal-clear waters at Dawki is important to you, we recommend travelling between November and January. During monsoon and post-monsoon months, the river can appear muddy despite being beautiful in its own way.

  • Travellers looking for a more relaxed Double Decker Root Bridge experience can choose to stay overnight at Nongriat Village. This will require extending the itinerary by one additional day.

  • Instead of staying at Dawki, you may choose to stay at Shnongpdeng. The area offers a more peaceful riverside atmosphere, although accommodation options are very limited and generally more basic.

  • Tourist infrastructure in South Garo Hills is still developing. Accommodation, dining and other tourist facilities are limited compared to many established tourist destinations in India. Travellers should expect a more remote travel experience, which is also what makes the region feel authentic, less crowded and largely untouched by mainstream tourism.

  • This itinerary involves long drives, a full-day trek to the Double Decker Root Bridge and Rainbow Falls, and a remote extension into South Garo Hills. It is best suited for travellers comfortable with active travel days.
