Zikation Recommends
-
Visit between November and January if your priority is crystal-clear waters, photography, Wari Chora, Dawki and picture-perfect landscapes.
-
Visit between July and September if your priority is waterfalls, clouds, greenery and experiencing Meghalaya at its monsoon best. The Classic Meghalaya Tour and Meghalaya Tour with Double Decker Root Bridge are particularly rewarding during this period.
-
If possible, visit Meghalaya twice. Winter and monsoon offer completely different experiences, and both are worth experiencing at least once.
Is Dawki Water Really Clear Throughout the Year?
Not always. Many of the famous photographs of Dawki and the Umngot River are taken during winter when the water is exceptionally clear and sunlight penetrates deep into the river. This creates the illusion of boats floating in the air and makes the river one of Meghalaya's most photographed destinations.
The clearest water is usually seen between November and January. Water clarity generally remains good until April, although water levels gradually reduce as summer progresses.
Once the pre-monsoon showers arrive in May, the river starts becoming less clear. During the monsoon season from June to September, rainfall and runoff from the surrounding hills can make the water appear muddy or greenish-brown.
This does not mean Dawki is not worth visiting during monsoon. The surrounding landscapes become greener, waterfalls are at their best and the entire region feels more dramatic. However, travellers expecting crystal-clear water based on social media photographs should plan their visit during winter.
The same seasonal pattern can also be seen at other Meghalaya attractions such as Blue Lagoon, Krangshuri Falls and several natural pools around the Double Decker Root Bridge and Rainbow Falls trek.
Can I Add Kaziranga National Park to a Meghalaya Tour?
Yes. Kaziranga National Park is one of the most popular extensions to a Meghalaya tour and is highly recommended for travellers interested in wildlife. The park is home to the world's largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros, along with elephants, wild buffaloes, deer and a wide variety of birdlife.
Kaziranga can be comfortably combined with both the Classic Meghalaya Tour and the Double Decker Root Bridge Tour. Most travellers add Kaziranga either at the beginning or end of their Meghalaya itinerary, depending on flight schedules and safari availability.
We recommend extending your trip by at least one day to include a jeep safari. Travellers with additional time can also opt for multiple safaris across different ranges of the national park.
Please note that Kaziranga National Park remains closed during the monsoon season, typically from June to October. If you are planning a monsoon trip to Meghalaya, Kaziranga cannot be included in the itinerary.
Zikation Recommends: Add Kaziranga if you are visiting Meghalaya between November and April/May and have at least one extra day available. If this is your first visit to Northeast India, Kaziranga is one of the best wildlife experiences that can be combined with a Meghalaya tour.
Can I Add Kamakhya Temple to a Meghalaya Tour?
Yes. Kamakhya Temple is located in Guwahati and can be easily added at the beginning or end of a Meghalaya tour. Since Guwahati is the main gateway to Meghalaya, the temple fits naturally into most travel itineraries.
The temple is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India and attracts devotees from across the country throughout the year. Depending on the crowd, a visit can take anywhere from a few hours to most of the day.
We recommend keeping one additional day in your itinerary for a comfortable visit, especially during weekends, public holidays and festival periods when waiting times can be significantly longer.
Zikation Recommends: Add Kamakhya Temple if you are interested in religious, cultural or spiritual experiences. It combines particularly well with 6-day and longer Meghalaya itineraries.
