Day-wise Itinerary for the Group Tour
Day 1: Guwahati - Shillong
Arrive at Guwahati airport or railway station latest by 1:30 PM. Meet and greet our representative and start our road journey to Shillong.
On the way, stop at Umium Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the region. For visitors, there are few activities like boating, kayaking etc. to keep them busy.
Reach Shillong by evening. Checkin to a hotel and relax.
Day 2: Shillong - Cherrapunji
After breakfast, checkout and start the journey towards Cherrapunji. The first stop will be at Shillong Peak, where you will get a bird's eye view of the capital city of Meghalaya. Later, we will stop at Elephant Falls. This is a multi-step waterfall closer to Shillong and is a good place to visit.
A short drive later, you will stop at Garden of Caves. This is an amazing place with numerous caves and waterfalls. Monsoon and post monsoon are the perfect time to visit this place.
By evening, you will reach Cherrapunji. Checkin to a hotel / homestay and relax.
Day 3: Cherrapunji Sightseeing
Cherrapunji has a lot to offer for visitors. We start early today to visit Mawsmai Caves, Seven Sisters Waterfalls (only during monsoon), Thangkharang Park. If time permits, we will also visit Eco Park before heading back to Cherrapunji for lunch. After quick lunch, we will go to Arwah Caves, Nohkalikai Falls View Point, Wei Sawdong Falls, and Dainthlen Falls. Later we will go back to hotel / homestay and relax.
Day 4: Double Decker Root Bridge & Rainbow Falls Trek
An adventurous day begins. We start our day early to drive till Tyrna village. The steep descend to Nongriat village starts here, and it takes about 2-2.5 hours to go down the 3500 steps. Spend some time at the Double Decker Root Bridge, and if interested, take a dip at the pool next to the bridge. Later, we continue our trek to Rainbow Falls, which would take another 2 hours. We should reach here before 12 noon to see the rainbow over the falls. On our way back, we stop at Blue Lagoon, to witness the bluest waters in the region, true to its name! We then come back to Nongriat Village, to trek back up to Tyrna.
Drive back to hotel after an adventurous day.
Day 5: Cherrapunji - Dawki
Post breakfast, go to the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong. Walk along the cleanest lanes of the village, talk to locals, have some great food. You can also go to a view point to get the first glimpses of Bangladesh from here.
Later, we will drive along the border of Bangladesh to reach Dawki. The Umgot River here has the cleanest waters (except during monsoon). Take a boat ride on the India - Bangladesh border. Overnight stay at hotel/homestay at Dawki.
Day 6: Dawki - Krangshuri - Laitlum Canyon - Guwahati
Always keep the best on the last day, as much as possible. We spend leisurely time at Dawki in the morning. The place becomes extremely beautiful after 10 am when the sunlight is really bright. You can see the shadow of the boat almost 10 feet below water, a sight that you can never forget! After spending some time, we later move to Krangshuri Waterfalls, one of the picturesque waterfalls in the region. Our tour to Meghalaya comes to an end today, as we drive past Umium Lake again to go back to Guwahati (airport / railway station / hotel).
What Is the Double Decker Living Root Bridge?
The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is one of Meghalaya's most remarkable natural and cultural landmarks. Located near Cherrapunji, the bridge is formed by training the roots of rubber fig trees over generations to create a natural, living structure. Unlike conventional bridges, these root bridges grow stronger over time and reflect the close relationship between local communities and their environment. The double-decker structure, with two levels of intertwined roots, is rare and showcases traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Visiting the bridge offers insight into sustainable practices and is considered a highlight of any Meghalaya trip.
Double Decker Root Bridge Trek Experience
The Double Decker Root Bridge trek is a rewarding experience that combines physical activity with scenic exploration. The trail involves descending and ascending stone steps through forested areas, streams and small villages, offering continuous views of Meghalaya's lush landscape. The trek is moderately challenging and best suited for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness. Guided trekking ensures safety, pacing and local insight along the route. Reaching the living root bridge provides a sense of achievement and an opportunity to appreciate one of Meghalaya's most unique natural creations in its natural setting.
Is Dawki water really clear or muddy?
Yes, the water at Dawki is genuinely clear, but its clarity depends heavily on the season and weather conditions. During the dry months, especially from December to April, the Umngot River appears crystal clear, often giving the illusion of boats floating in the air.
However, during the monsoon season (June to September), heavy rainfall causes the river to turn muddy and brown due to silt runoff from the surrounding hills. Water clarity can also reduce temporarily after continuous rain, even outside peak monsoon months.
For travellers hoping to see the famous clear waters of Dawki, visiting during the dry season and staying nearby offers the best chance to experience the river at its clearest.
Can I add Kaziranga to the Meghalaya group tour?
Kaziranga National Park is not included as part of the Meghalaya group tour itinerary, as group tours follow a fixed route and schedule focused entirely on Meghalaya's highlights.
However, if you're interested in visiting Kaziranga, we can arrange a customised extension after the group tour is completed. This allows you to add a wildlife experience at your own pace, including safari planning, transfers, and accommodation, without affecting the group tour schedule.
Can I add Kamakhya Temple visit to the Meghalaya group tour?
A visit to Kamakhya Temple is not included in the standard Meghalaya group tour itinerary, as group tours follow a fixed schedule focused entirely on Meghalaya's destinations.
However, if you wish to visit Kamakhya Temple, we can arrange a customised extension either before or after the group tour. Adding this visit typically requires one additional day, allowing enough time for travel and darshan without impacting the group itinerary.
If you're interested in this option, feel free to reach out — we'll be happy to help plan the Kamakhya visit as a smooth add-on to your Meghalaya group tour.
Important Information
Except for Shillong, stay will be at homestays at all other places
There are very few good hotels / homestays in Meghalaya (even though it is a popular tourist destination)
Many hotels / homestays have very minimum options for breakfast. There will be no buffet breakfast. Homestay owners prepare as per need
It is better to book early to get a good accommodation. Budget options will always be available, they will be neat and clean but with very minimal services.
Please note that Dawki waters will be muddy during monsoon. If you are visiting Dawki by looking at internet photos, then you will be disappointed (though other places will be at their best during monsoon)
If you want a relaxed trek, you can spend one night at Nongriat Village. If chosen, your tour will get extended by a day
You can opt for stay at Shnongpdeng instead of Dawki. However, there are very basic homestays here and not much options to stay. If you are okay with camping by the river, then this is a perfect place to stay instead of Dawki.
If you want to visit Kamakhya Temple near Guwahati, then you need to extend your tour by one day. Please contact us for the same.
If you want to visit Kaziranga, you can extend your tour by one more day. Please contact us for the same.
